Dr. Karl Muth
AI Researcher and Interdisciplinary Professor
Dr. Karl Muth is among the most published legal scholars of his generation and an expert on regulated markets. He is quoted or cited by name fifteen times in recent SEC Final Rules and has been cited by Secretary Countryman (twice) and Commissioner Aguilar of the SEC. Muth’s scholarly writing appeared in the Oxford Handbook for Global Policy and Transnational Administration, a wide variety of law and policy journals, four Harvard-published journals, and he often co-authors research with thought-leaders, recently including the Hon. James A. Shapiro and Asst. Atty. Gen. Nancy Jack.
His research at the intersection of markets, policy, and defense topics include research from space technology (including interplanetary colonization, in University of Illinois-Chicago Law Review) to nuclear proliferation (in Transnational Law & Contemporary Problems) to plenary and practical issues surrounding defense procurement (in the International Journal of Naval History). One of the few researchers to spend time “on the ground” in Somalia during the piracy crisis, Muth lived in Uganda, Djibouti, and elsewhere in the region and generated analysis and intelligence in support of Combined Task Force 150.
The youngest person ever appointed at Northwestern to teach across five disciplines (at age 32), Muth studied law at the undergraduate level in the Netherlands before earning his J.D. in the United States. He then earned a masters degree, with a concentration in economics, at the University of Chicago. Following these studies, he earned his M.Phil. and Ph.D. from the London School of Economics, where he studied how commodity producers make decisions. His current research focuses on risk measurement and how markets–or market-like incentives–can be tailored to create desirable outcomes.
